Welcome to a new week, where we hope you didn’t put away your sweaters too early because it’s … chilly! Below, we give you a preview of what to expect in and around City Hall this week. In this space, we offer you a brief preview of what to expect on the roads: If you're planning to head down South Palm Canyon Drive on Wednesday brace for some disruption — intermittent lane closures in both directions on the South Palm Canyon Bridge are set to run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to support crane operations, with flaggers on hand near the bridge and at the intersection of South Palm Canyon Drive and Mesquite Avenue. Take it easy out there!

Bike plans, airport updates and a fee fight headline this week’s city meetings

Six Palm Springs city bodies could meet across four days this week, with active transportation planning, airport operations and a code enforcement dispute among the most substantive items on the docket.

Driving the news: The Sustainability Commission's Standing Subcommittee on Active Transportation kicks off the week today at 1 p.m. at City Hall, with members set to review a draft bicycle map, discuss CV Link, and take up bicycle and pedestrian planning along Ramon Road. The subcommittee will also discuss plans for a Ride of Silence event scheduled for May 20 at Ruth Hardy Park.

  • Returning from old business are a discussion of bicycle parking — including a GIS map of existing racks and trailhead locations — and a follow-up on the Sunny Dunes area.

Also today: The Human Rights Commission meets at 5 p.m. in City Hall's Large Conference Room. Commissioners will discuss updates to the community service awards website and take up future agenda items, including a previously expressed interest in hearing from the Palm Springs Unified School District and exploring disability access in the city.

Midweek: The Administrative Appeals Board meets Wednesday at 2 p.m. to hear a single but consequential item — an appeal of $20,257.34 in administrative abatement fees assessed to the Bryan J. Wilson Living Trust for a property at 1442 Padua Way.

Also Wednesday: The Airport Commission meets at 4 p.m. at Palm Springs International Airport. Items include a restroom renovation update for the Bono Concourse and Courtyard areas, a summer ramp-down schedule from concessions vendor Paradies, and a March 2026 airline activity report.

But wait: Agendas for the VillageFest Board, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the Measure J Oversight Commission, typically the third Thursday of the month, had not been released as of this writing.

🚠 And Finally …

The Palm Springs International Film Society has locked in dates for its next two major events, giving cinephiles in the desert — and a few thousand of their closest friends from around the world — something to put on the calendar.

Driving the news: The Palm Springs International ShortFest returns this year from June 23 through 29, followed by the 38th Palm Springs International Film Festival, running Jan. 7 through 18, 2027.

The ShortFest: One of the largest short-film showcases in North America, the event includes screenings, industry panels and classes through its ShortFest Forum, with $25,000 in awards and cash prizes — including five Academy Award-qualifying awards — announced during the week, and Best of Fest shorts screening on the final day.

The film festival: The Film Awards gala opens the festival Jan. 7 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with screenings beginning Jan. 8, Closing Night on Jan. 17 and Best of Fest programming wrapping things up Jan. 18.

Worth noting: Nearly all honorees at the 2026 Film Awards went on to receive Academy Award nominations.

Details: Film Awards and festival passes go on sale Aug. 1. More information is available at psfilmfest.org or by calling 760-778-8979 or 800-898-7256.
