Monday, April 20 | ☀️ 84°/59°

Welcome to Monday, April 20 (AKA “420 Day”). Despite what you may have heard, "420" was never a police code for marijuana — that's a widely debunked myth. The term actually traces back to 1971, when a group of California teenagers known as "the Waldos" used 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time for a search for a hidden cannabis crop, and somehow their inside code went on to become a global cultural phenomenon.

Airport expansion, housing funds and landmark designation discussions on tap

A busy week of public meetings gets underway in Palm Springs today, with advisory bodies and the City Council taking up topics ranging from airport infrastructure to historic preservation and federal housing dollars.

Looking ahead: The City Council meets Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with four public hearings scheduled, including a vote on a Community Development Block Grant action plan allocating $337,285 in federal housing funds and revised Owner-Occupied Home Rehabilitation Program guidelines. Members will also consider covenant agreements with two hotel operators — Terra Palm Springs at 888 North Indian Canyon Drive and The Cactai Palm Springs.

  • A public hearing on Class 1 Landmark designation for the First Church of Christ Scientist is also on the agenda. Separately, the council has placed a stand-alone discussion item on the mayoral position under Business & Legislative.

At the airport: The Airport Commission Budget & Finance Committee opens the week today at 9 a.m. with a review of the airport's full operating budget for fiscal year 2026-27 and a briefing on a $27.2 million expansion program that includes a new rental car center, auxiliary Federal Inspection Station and satellite terminal, with a completion target of Dec. 31, 2027.

  • The committee will also review proposed electric vehicle charger fees, plus a 99 cent session fee on top of existing parking charges.

Also today: The Architectural Review Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. to consider a nearly 20,000-square-foot medical office building for American Reproductive Centers at 1199 North Indian Canyon Drive and a duplex at 301 West Via Escuela.

On Tuesday: The Sustainability Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. to continue work on an energy-efficient upgrade ordinance and a greenhouse gas request for proposals, hear a presentation on desert climate resilience from a UC Riverside researcher, and begin planning for a city-organized Extreme Heat Summit set for Sept. 18.

Fred Bronson and others on the set of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

What better way to spend a Wednesday evening than going where no one has gone before — at least in the Coachella Valley?

Driving the news: Fred Bronson, a local resident who wrote the animated episode "The Counter-Clock Incident," co-wrote two "Next Generation" episodes, and spent decades as a close friend of series creator Gene Roddenberry, will share behind-the-scenes stories from his life with the franchise at the Mizell Center on April 29 at 6 p.m.

  • Arrive at 5:30 p.m. to hear music from across the "Star Trek" series before the talk begins. The event is free, with an optional $5 donation to benefit Mizell.

What to expect: Bronson's stories span from the original series to "Strange New Worlds," touching on his appearances in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," surprising cast encounters, and his role in shaping franchise canon — including the creation of Captain Robert April.

About the photo: Bronson shared a snapshot from the set of "Ménage À Troi," the "Next Generation" episode he co-wrote with Susan Sackett, taken at Huntington Gardens in Pasadena — which stood in for the planet Betazed.
