Subcommittee flags safety concerns with bike map, takes up Ramon overhaul

A Palm Springs cycling and pedestrian advisory panel heard calls Monday for traffic safety improvements along a one-mile stretch of Ramon Road and raised concerns that errors in the city's revised bicycle map could expose the city to legal liability.

Driving the news: Residents from the Warm Sands and Baristo neighborhoods told the Active Transportation Subcommittee that the segment of Ramon Road between Sunrise Way and Indian Canyon Drive has recorded an injury accident rate seven times the citywide average for residential streets between 2023 and mid-2025. Neighbors are pushing for crosswalks, updated medians, lighting, and a CV Link connection along the corridor.

  • A joint neighborhood committee has identified improvements drawn from a plan the city and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians created more than 12 years ago.

Yes, but: The subcommittee stopped short of taking formal action, instead reaching a general consensus that members would engage with neighborhood organizations and report back at a future meeting.

What else: Members reviewing a draft of the city's revised bicycle map found that Ramon Road is classified as a Class 3 bike route — indicating shared-lane markings — even though no such markings exist on the road. Some routes on the map also direct cyclists onto sidewalks, which the city's municipal code prohibits.

  • "It leaves the city open to a lawsuit, to be honest," one subcommittee member said.

What's next: The subcommittee asked members to submit revision comments to staff, who recommended the city move to annual map updates. Members also agreed to place downtown bicycle access on the agenda for their next meeting, focusing on Belardo Road and Palm Canyon Drive as potential routes.
