American Reproductive Center moves closer to rebuilding

The Palm Springs Architectural Review Committee (ARC) on Monday approved new architectural plans for the reconstruction of a fertility clinic destroyed in a domestic terrorist attack last year.

Driving the news: The committee approved the major architectural application for the 19,347-square-foot, two-story medical office building at 1199 North Indian Canyon Dr. to replace the facility destroyed on May 17, 2025.

Looking back: The clinic presented initial rebuilding plans to the Planning Commission in February, which moved the project forward. But it also requested 11 design changes — including shifting the building's style from Mediterranean to contemporary to better align with the area's midcentury modern architecture.

  • The project is under an expedited review process because it falls within a "Disaster Overlay Zone" created by the city council after the attack to ease rebuilding.

Security first: While recent city meetings have touched on design and aesthetics, the clinic's primary focus in the rebuild is safety. New features include a perimeter block wall, raised planters to prevent vehicles from approaching the building, and a 24/7 staffed guardhouse controlling parking lot access.

  • The project's architect told the committee that staff members "still have that fear anytime somebody shows up to the door that's uninvited," describing the security features as both a physical and psychological barrier.

Yes but: Committee members bristled at the design for the guardhouse, with one member asking whether there was a way to make it look “less self-important.” They resolved this by asking that the overhang of the guard shack be shorter in length.

What's next: The ARC added several more conditions to the approval Monday, including more shade trees along Indian Canyon Drive, larger boulders along North Palm Canyon Drive, and more cohesive building facades, among other design-focused changes.
