Palm Springs Active Transportation Subcommittee members laid out their priorities for connections to the CV Link during a Monday meeting.

Palm Springs secures $900,000 for pedestrian plan as regional bike network takes shape

Palm Springs has secured $900,000 in federal funding to update and expand its pedestrian plan, setting the stage for broader changes to the city’s active transportation network.

Driving the news: Members of the Palm Springs Active Transportation Subcommittee — made up of commissioners from the city’s Sustainability Commission — learned Monday that the federal government had approved the funding, with minor modifications. The money will expand the city’s 2021 pedestrian plan to include bicycle infrastructure and traffic-calming projects.

How it works: The money will allow for a more complete overhaul of the plan. Committee members had ideas about what should be included in the plan’s update, including the width of sidewalks, wayfinding, and better cycling infrastructure at the busiest roadways.

Yes and: Also at the meeting, committee members learned more about the progress on making more connections to the CV Link. A representative from the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) said they have identified 44 projects throughout the valley to improve CV Link connections with homes, schools, and parks.

What they’re saying: “We recognize that CV Link is a linear path through a very wide valley,” Satin said. “So part of the challenge is getting people to that path.”

Dive deeper: Committee members and public commenters identified several specific local infrastructure concerns relating to bike safety and safe passage to the CV Link.

  • The Ramon Road bridge came up frequently as an example of a dangerous crossing. Also top of mind were safety issues or missing connections at major roads and intersections throughout the city.

What to expect: Staff members will compile the committee’s suggestions to provide to consultants once work begins on updating the pedestrian plan. The conceptual plan is expected to be completed by June, with design work continuing through September.

A statue of former Mayor Frank Bogert on horseback is loaded onto a city truck and driven away from City Hall in 2022.

🐴 Arts Commission chair defends Bogert statue vote amid Brown Act concerns

  • Palm Springs Public Arts Commission Chair Gary Armstrong defended the commission's January vote to relocate former mayor Frank Bogert's statue to Village Green, stating the commission "acted lawfully and followed the required process" despite City Attorney Jeff Ballinger later suggesting the City Council void the decision due to a potential Brown Act violation stemming from a November council discussion.

  • The confusion began when then-Mayor Ron deHarte suggested moving the statue from storage during the part of the meeting where councilmembers propose future agenda items. Other councilmembers agreed to let the Public Arts Commission handle the decision, though at the November meeting Ballinger warned that the discussion was going too far for a topic that was not properly placed on the agenda.

  • Bottom line: The statue has remained in storage since 2022 after a controversial report linked Bogert to injustice decades ago in the city. Armstrong said it will stay in storage "unless and until we are directed by City Council or the city manager's office."

🚠 And Finally …

🐾 Each week, The Post partners with a local animal shelter to feature one or more of the many animal companions ready for a new home in our community.

Today, we invite you to meet Opie, a 7-month-old orange Domestic Shorthair who has had a longer stay at the shelter than most of the current residents. Staff at the shelter say he is on the shy side, but can be really playful.

  • Staff also said he can get overexcited easily, so experienced cat owners are preferred.

If you’re interested: You can visit the shelter at 4575 E. Mesquite Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on all days except for Mondays (open for intake only) and Thursdays (1 p.m. until 7 p.m.). You can always call the shelter at (760) 416-5718.

  • Make sure to check out all the other pets at the shelter here.
