Roughly 100 residents and business owners gathered inside Fire Station 1 to learn more about plans to modernize the aging facility.

Residents, business owners, city officials discuss future of downtown fire station

The Palm Springs Fire Department hosted the first of two community open houses Monday to outline modernization plans for Fire Station 1, with officials stating the current facility can no longer meet the demands of modern emergency services.

Driving the news: About 100 residents and business owners attended the meeting to view conceptual designs and tour the 5,000-square-foot station that’s approaching 70 years in action.

  • Fire Chief Paul Alvarado told attendees the structure is antiquated and lacks the safety standards required for a growing community.

Why here: After analyzing call volume and other data, analysts said the best place for a downtown fire station is actually its current location.

  • “When we moved the fire station across the street… we lost four-tenths of a mile of coverage,” Alvarado said. Moving to other suggested locations like Sunrise Parkway and Alejo Road “took away 8.2 miles of city coverage.”

At issue: A group of property and business owners from the 200 and 300 blocks of North Palm Canyon Drive, calling themselves the “Block 200 Club”, also attended the meaning and raised concerns about the potential loss of a nearby surface lot to accommodate plans for the new fire station.

What’s next: Assistant City Manager Flinn Fagg said city staff will compile the feedback gathered during the open house to present to the City Council during a study session scheduled for March 11.

  • A second open house is scheduled for Monday, March 30, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1.

🏗️ Demuth Park improvement project launching March 2

  • Palm Springs will begin a wide-ranging improvement project at Demuth Park on March 2, closing both the small and large dog parks for most of the construction period, which is expected to last through the end of October.

  • The project includes improvements to both dog parks, a new restroom building, ADA access upgrades, new parking lots, a bathroom near the soccer field, asphalt paving of a dirt lot, netting along field seven, and turf and field improvements to the Youth League fields.

  • Details: The city is asking residents to use the City Hall dog park during construction. The Demuth project will overlap with a pickleball renovation already underway at the park. The dog parks may reopen sometime in the middle of summer, depending on the construction schedule.
