Eight-home development sent back for redesign

A proposed eight-home development near the Palm Springs airport will undergo a redesign after the Architectural Review Committee voted unanimously Monday to order a restudy of the plans.

Driving the news: The committee praised the Pueo Palm Springs project's intent to bring single-story, single-family housing to the area but required changes to color, solar orientation, and architectural details before it can move forward.

How we got here: The Planning Commission conditionally approved the project on Jan. 27 with direction to incorporate accent colors into the design. The committee reversed course Monday, preferring the original monochromatic palette over the bright primary colors added in response to that direction.

  • "I just don't want it to be atomic ranch and kitschy," said committee member Jacqueline Thomas.

Details: Sister City Investments Inc. is proposing to construct eight detached single-family residences with accessory dwelling units on a 2.53-acre vacant lot at 2700 E. Alejo Road, east of Farrell Drive.

What else: Under the new conditions, the developer must reorient several lots so that all swimming pools face south to maximize winter sunlight and provide protection from prevailing northwest winds.

  • Other required changes include narrowing driveways to increase landscaping space, thinning roof profiles to match surrounding homes, and extending sun-shading devices over windows.

What's next: Despite the lengthy list of required changes, committee members expressed strong support for the project's core concept. Developer Neil Curry is expected to return to a future committee meeting with revised plans incorporating the new conditions.

🚠 And Finally …

🐾 Each week, The Post partners with a local animal shelter to feature one or more of the many animal companions ready for a new home in our community.

Today, we invite you to meet Rocky, a one-year-old male Shepherd mix who needs some extra attention since he’s deaf. Staff at the shelter say, despite his hearing issues, he's great in the car and on a leash.

  • Staff also said he's extremely affectionate to familiar people.

If you’re interested: You can visit the shelter at 4575 E. Mesquite Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on all days except for Mondays (open for intake only) and Thursdays (1 p.m. until 7 p.m.). You can always call the shelter at (760) 416-5718.

  • Make sure to check out all the other pets at the shelter here
