Welcome to Tuesday, folks. The city’s new sustainability director will report to work on April 20 (more on that below), but you don’t have to wait until then to get in on the act because there’s a free shredding, e-waste and bulky items event on Saturday. And — bonus! — if you can’t make it Saturday, you can drop off your items for shredding inside City Hall through Thursday during normal business hours. Need details? Turn here.

City announces two changes to leadership team

The City of Palm Springs announced two leadership changes Monday, with Palm Springs International Airport Executive Director Harry Barrett Jr. departing for a Sacramento County position this spring and Jasmine Fields named as the city's new director of sustainability.

Driving the news: Barrett will leave PSP to become assistant director of the Sacramento County Department of Airports. He will remain in his current role through May 21 before beginning the new position May 26.

  • During his tenure, the airport saw roughly 30% passenger growth, set multiple annual and monthly passenger records, and added nonstop service to more than a dozen new destinations.

What's next: The city has not yet designated an interim executive director and has not determined a timeline for recruiting Barrett's replacement. PSP's existing executive leadership team will manage day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives in the interim.

On the sustainability front: Fields will assume the director of sustainability role on April 20, replacing Lindsey-Paige McCloy, who left the city late last year for a similar position in Pasadena.

  • Fields comes to Palm Springs from the Borough of State College in Pennsylvania, where she served as Sustainability Program Officer overseeing environmental conservation, renewable energy, active transportation and greenhouse gas reduction programs. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in sustainability management at USC.

Why it matters: Palm Springs has made sustainability a central part of its long-term planning, with desert-specific challenges — including heat, water supply and resource management — driving those priorities.

  • City Manager Scott Stiles said Fields' experience "connecting climate strategy with community-based solutions will help advance the city's sustainability goals."

💣 Marine detained after live explosive thought to be inert found at airport

  • A 30-year-old Marine from Henderson, Texas, was detained after TSA screeners discovered a live 25mm explosive round in his belongings at Palm Springs International Airport at approximately 12 p.m. Monday.

  • The man told officers he had found the ordnance in a field about a year earlier and kept it, believing it was inert. The Riverside County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team confirmed via X-ray it was live, then transported and destroyed it in a desert area off Gene Autry Trail, just south of Interstate 10.

  • Details: Palm Springs police are submitting the case to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for review of a potential violation of California Penal Code section 18710, possession of a destructive device. The man was released to military authorities and may also face Marine Corps administrative action and a TSA civil penalty.
