Welcome to Wednesday! If you’ve already got your eye on the weekend — particularly Saturday — you might like to know that the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is running holiday hours on both days for Presidents' Day, with the first tram up at 8 a.m. and the last tram up at 8 p.m. And if you’d like to treat your Valentine to a romantic dinner several thousand feet up the mountain on Saturday, Peaks Restaurant is serving a special prix fixe dinner featuring options like grilled mango salmon and petite filet mignon. That’s not a bad way to combine a holiday weekend with a romantic evening above the desert floor!

A pair of factors has stalled completion of the building at right on the vacant Sunny Dunes Road lot on the left, officials were told Tuesday.
Planning Commission extends approval for Sunny Dunes mixed-use project
A two-story development on one of the last vacant lots in central Palm Springs received a two-year extension on Tuesday, giving the project's owner more time to pivot from its original cannabis-focused design.
Driving the news: The Planning Commission unanimously approved extending prior approvals for the mixed-use building at 605 Sunny Dunes Road, which was first greenlit in July 2023 but stalled after its planned cannabis tenant withdrew.
Applicant Jim Lande, who also serves on the city's Public Arts Commission, purchased the site in 2022.
What changed: The project originally centered on a cannabis dispensary and lounge, but Palm Springs Coffeeshop, LLC unexpectedly pulled out due to the downturn in the cannabis industry. The construction company that had signed on also filed for bankruptcy.
What's next: Lande now plans to shift the project to include affordable multi-family residential units on the second floor and commercial retail on the first floor, with at least three dwelling units possible upstairs.
Depending on the final design and whether Lande uses the state's Density Bonus Law, the project could return to the Architectural Review Committee or Planning Commission for additional approvals.
The backstory: The vacant lot has hosted popular public art installations over the past few years, including "The Popsicles" in 2021 and "The Neighbors" in 2025.

The city is about to get a whole lot blonder as Palm Springs Pride plans to host Marilyn 100, a four-day festival celebrating Marilyn Monroe's 100th birthday on June 1, with festivities running from May 29 through June 1.
Driving the news: The festival will include an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Marilyn Monroe, with organizers aiming to assemble 500 participants in downtown Palm Springs on May 30 to surpass the current record of 254.
Participants will receive a Marilyn Icon Kit for a $75 registration fee, which includes a white halter dress, platinum blonde wig, and a ticket to the record-setting event featuring a synchronized martini or mocktini toast.
Why it matters: Proceeds support Palm Springs Pride's LGBTQ+ advocacy work, connecting Monroe's legacy as an early champion of authenticity with the organization's mission of visibility and inclusion.
The details: A Marilyn Glam pop-up dressing room and boutique will operate near the Forever Marilyn statue from May 28 through May 30, serving as registration and costume kit pickup.
How to participate: Registration is open at pspride.org.
